The Battle of Britain comes to The Beacon

The Beacon held its first whole school enrichment day this year and Humanities was the chosen subject area. This year we decided to focus the topic on the Battle of Britain. Students from all areas of the school participated and hosted activities both in and out of school.

Activities ranged from painting spitfires and research the different colour schemes to taking part in Lindy Hop, a popular dance at the time of the war. Some classes even replicated the Battles with a walkthrough battlefield with a well-staffed nursing stations to attend at the end! The highlight for many of our students though was visiting the Battle of Britain memorial in Capel-Le-Ferne.

This gave students a chance to get up close to replica Spitfires and Hurricane aircraft from the war as well as paying their respects at the memorial. Furthermore, students experienced the life of a pilot waiting to be called into action during the “scramble” experience as well as dressing in up in some of the uniforms from the time. The Beacon would like to extend a huge thank you to the staff at the memorial who were so helpful in helping the day to run smoothly. Overall our first Enrichment day was a huge success and we are looking forward to our next day in term 6 for PSHE.
