Mentor Reading Programme at The Beacon

Throughout the last term, we have started a mentor reading programme. This is a cross zonal project aimed at raising the profile of reading.

The younger students bring books that they are working on in their own classroom. They are then paired up with an older student, who either reads to them or listens to them read. This has helped form mutual respect and understanding between the students even though the age gap can be 10 years. The students were apprehensive at first but it has since become routine on a Wednesday afternoon.

The classes involved in this are Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica, Morocco, Mauritius, Madagascar and Zimbabwe. We look forward to developing and expanding this programme with other areas of the school.
